Spring Cleaning and My Job Search Saturday, Apr 7 2007

I’ve found that doing spring cleaning in April when you know you’re going to move in May makes throwing things away incredibly easy. Receipt for a soda I paid cash for? Gone. This cute card from a friend back home that is lovely but says nothing more than “what’s up”? Adios. Wrapping paper that was perfect for Christmas but has since sat upright in the corner of my room unused and unwanted? Outta here. Another Renee in another time might think Hey, what if I need a record of that purchase/need this as a reminder to write my friend back/have to wrap a gift in the next 5 weeks? But no, no, my friends, no, no. Off to the trash room, which by the way is another breakthrough because I often leave my garbage bags (containing mostly just a lot of paper) in the hallway inside my apartment for a few days before I get the energy to take it 30 feet away to the actual Room ‘O Trash. (Look, do you want me running things to the trash room all day or do you want me writing fabulous posts? Ok then.)

In other news, the job search is going swimmingly. And by swimmingly I mean it’s a pain in my ass and I hate every minute of it. (For a reference as to how I feel, check out this blog entry and my comment on it.) As a future public relations practitioner, person after person is trying to get me to move to the Big Apple. That’s a little drastic for me, I think, and the most populated city in the country that I could handle at this point is probably Philly, though I’m much more of a Boston girl. I’m finding myself applying to job after job in city after random city, with little direction except for the words “public relations” and “communication” flowing from my fingertips every 5 seconds. I want to send these people an email that says, “Hi! I promise I’m qualified and will produce results, just please give me a flippin’ job!” Sadly, that’s not as compelling as one might think.

Well, back to the grindstone. Ooh, shampoo promotion in Tuscaloosa, Alabama? Hell yes. Hell yes.

Why should the chief bean counter have a lock on the path to CEO, I asked, when the number of beans to be counted is predicated by the company’s reputational momentum? - Jon Harmon, Force For Good

I agree with Mr. Harmon, who, by the way, will be speaking to one of my PR classes this Thursday. Reputation management and the creation of the CRO is not only excellent news for my growing major, but smart and logical for companies. Advertising is no longer the way! Public relations is essential to a successful business.

It’s a great time to be a PR major.
